Located at the base of Mt Hood in the Columbia Gorge AVA (American Viticultural Area), Davidson Hill Vineyards supplies Malbec and Riesling grapes to area wineries. The unique microclimate of the vineyard has shown itself to be ideal for growing both varietals. The warm days, sometimes reaching the high 90’s, accompanied by nights cooling into the 50’s, help maintain the acid and sugar levels needed to give the perfect balance of flavors. With a longer growing season, by up to four to six weeks, than other areas, the tannins, aroma and profile characteristics have the time to reach their maximum maturity. Often times the grapes are allowed to grow until just before the first freeze. This allows for the harvesting of grapes at cooler temperatures which slows down oxidation which begins as soon as the grapes are cut from the vine. Slower oxidation has a positive effect on the color and taste of the juices extracted from the grapes.
